Smells like Autumn / Já cheira a Outono

The arrival of Autumn, after a month of October that still smelled as Summer, is finally being felt among us. The landscape begins to change color, bare branches start appearing in trees, and the vine leaves are now painted with fine gold with exquisite touches of red before falling, in an ephemeral show that worth a visit. Completing the portrait of the season, the inevitable wood burning smoke loaded with scents. The regions of Marco and Baião, which inspired this work, occur to me whenever I think of all this atmosphere, perhaps because of the enormous proportions that sometimes can be found in the traditional house's chimneys...
Após um mês de Outubro que ainda cheirava a Verão, começa finalmente a sentir-se entre nós a chegada do Outono. A paisagem começa a mudar de cor, ramos nus aparecem as árvores e as folhas das vinhas pintam-se de dourado com requintados toques de vermelho escuro antes de caírem, num espectáculo efémero que vale a pena a deslocação. A completar o quadro da época, o inevitável fumo de lenha carregado de aromas. As regiões do Marco e de Baião, que inspiraram este trabalho, ocorrem-me sempre que penso em toda esta atmosfera, talvez por causa das enormes proporções que por vezes se lá encontram nas chaminés das casas tradicionais...

A yellow farm / Uma quinta amarela

Painted in soft yellow, here we have one of these charming farms with its inevitable windmill, as is still found here in the northern coast area, in places where agriculture stubbornly resist to the pressure of urban development. It is even likely that "Quinta Amarela", Yellow Farm, is the name that can be read in the tile panel near the elegant entrance, this being one of the most common names, along with others shown before, with which this kind of properties are sometimes baptized. Yet the tone of yellow itself varies, from the softness noted here until certain tones now in common use, so intense that transform any structure, be it farm, villa or urban building, into a gigantic sort of egg yolk pudding with tiles...
Pintada num suave amarelo, aqui temos uma dessas encantadoras quintas com o seu incontornável catavento, conforme ainda se vai encontrando aqui pelo litoral norte, em lugares onde a agricultura teima em resistir à pressão urbanística. É até bem provável que “Quinta Amarela” seja o nome que se lê no painel de azulejos junto ao elegante portal, sendo este um dos nomes mais comuns, a par com outros como este aqui visto em tempos, com que entre nós se baptiza este género de propriedades. Já o tom de amarelo, esse varia, deste a discrição que aqui se nota, até certas tonalidades de uso corrente, de tal forma berrantes que transformam qualquer construção, seja ela quinta, vivenda ou prédio urbano, numa espécie de gigantesco pudim de gemas com telhas por cima...

Pink house, white windows / Casa rosa, janelas brancas

We escape this time to the almost omnipresent rural and mountainous areas to find ourselves in front of a small house of a more urban type, quite small but trying, by its ornamentation, to "dress up" as showy as some mansions of its time, the late 19th or early 20th centuries. A kind of "grandma's house" that still can be found in our towns and cities, although of a kind in quick extinction - the house, not the grandma.
Fugimos desta vez às quase omnipresentes paragens rurais e montanhosas para nos encontrarmos defronte de uma pequena casa de características mais urbanas, de pequenas dimensões mas tentando, pela sua ornamentação, "vestir-se" de forma tão vistosa como certos palacetes da sua época, os finais do séc XIX / início do século XX. Um género de "casa da avó" que se vai ainda encontrando um pouco pelas nossas cidades e vilas, embora se trate de uma espécie em rápida extinção - a casa, não a avó.

Morning light / Luz da manhã

The image of a village viewed from a high point, shining under the morning light against the huge counterfort of a nearby mountain, isn't ficticious, although the village that we see here is. Indeed, it is one of the most beautiful images that I retain from one of my trips to the region of the Peneda mountains, something I am always eager to repeat, and it was time to try something interesting with that tasty piece of memory.
A imagem de uma aldeia vista desde um ponto alto, luzindo sob o sol da manhã contra o enorme contraforte de uma montanha próxima, não é ficção, ainda que a aldeia que aqui vemos o seja. Na verdade, é das imagens mais belas que retenho de uma das minhas idas até à região da serra da Peneda, empreitada que estou sempre ansioso por repetir, e já era tempo de tentar fazer algo de interessante com esse apetitoso pedaço de memória.

A green land / Uma terra verde

The mountain scenery has a particular charm in some gray and wet days, especially now that Autumn has arrived. The meek donkey, the best of companions in those pathways difficult to access, brings in his back the fruitful result of a trip to the nearby chesnut trees ...
The inspiration for this work came, with a few adapting changes, from a neighboring land where the villages and their architectures and ways of life do not differ that much from my own: The beautiful Galicia, which I love as much as my own Country even if don't know it so well: I believe we all have a "Country of affections" whose boundaries not always coincide with the ones in the maps, and this green land in the north of Spain with a character of its own, and to which I am bound with tenuous ties of blood, is no doubt part of mine.
All this because of a powerful documentary I had the chance to watch recently, entitled "A aldea, o antigo e o novo" - The village, the ancient and the new - dated from 2000, about the decline of those Galician villages, their populations and ancestral ways of life, and its rediscovery by new residents who seek a new life there, healthier and closer to nature, despite the difficult conditions and extreme hardship - quite different from the romantic idea that sometimes one has - of these places as beautiful as wild and isolated, and so beautifully filmed here that one can almost feel the smells of earth, smoke and mist ...
I leave above the link to this masterpiece of about 62 minutes, strongly recommended to anyone who appreciates these worlds of villages, mountains, their homes and their people.
A paisagem de montanha reveste-se de particular encanto em certos dias cinzentos e húmidos, especialmente agora que o Outono chegou. O amável jumento, o melhor dos companheiros naqueles caminhos de difícil acesso, traz no lombo o proveitoso resultado de uma ida ás castanhas nas proximidades...
A inspiração para este trabalho veio, com as devidas adaptações, de uma terra vizinha onde as aldeias e respectivas arquitecturas e modos de não diferem assim tanto das nossas: A bela Galiza, que conheço mal mas de que gosto tanto como se fosse o meu próprio País: É que todos temos um “País de afectos” cujas fronteiras nem sempre coincidem com as dos mapas, e aquela verdejante terra do norte de Espanha mas com um carácter muito próprio, e à qual me ligam ténues laços de sangue faz, sem qualquer dúvida, parte do meu.
Tudo isto a pretexto de um poderoso documentário dali oriundo, intitulado "A Aldea, o antigo e o novo", datado de 2000 mas que só tive a oportunidade de visionar recentemente, que aborda o declínio dessas mesmas aldeias, respectivas populações e modos de vida ancestrais, e a sua redescoberta por novos habitantes que nelas buscam uma nova existência mais saudável e próxima da Natureza, mau grado as condições difíceis e a extrema dureza - bem diferentes da ideia romântica que às vezes se tem - destes lugares tão belos quanto agrestes e isolados, aqui filmados de tal forma magistralmente que quase se consegue sentir os cheiros da terra, do fumo e do orvalho...

The river place / O lugar do rio

In the vicinity of major urban centers is still possible to find places along the waterfront where, despite the pollution, certain uncaractheristic buildings or eucalyptus woods, there are elements still in place as reservoirs, mills, small stone bridges, surrounding fields and gardens that lead for the simplicity that these places have had in days gone. Reasonably intact, the one you see in the image still allows some enjoyment, even to grill some sardines at the doorstep, though I would not like to be in the shoes of those who will wear those hanging trousers if the wind changes direction ...
Nas proximidades dos maiores centros urbanos é ainda possível encontrar lugares à beira-rio onde, não obstante a poluição, certas construções descaracterizantes ou as manchas de eucaliptos, ainda permanecem no lugar açudes, moinhos, pequenas pontes em pedra, campos envolventes e quintais que remetem para o bucolismo que esses lugares terão tido outrora. Razoavelmente intacto, o que se vê na imagem ainda permite que dele se disfrute, até mesmo para assar umas sardinhas à porta de casa, embora eu não gostasse de estar na pele de quem irá vestir aquelas calças dependuradas no caso de o vento mudar de direcção...
